Key Components of Iron Studies

Why the Test is Performed
Doctors order this test to identify:

  • Iron Deficiency Anemia: Low iron, high TIBC, low ferritin.
  • Iron Overload/Hemochromatosis: High iron, low/normal TIBC, high saturation/ferritin.
  • Chronic Illnesses: Conditions causing anemia of chronic disease.

    Test Preparation and Results

  • Preparation: While some labs allow eating, it is often recommended to fast (no food) overnight and avoid iron supplements for 24 hours prior.
  • Timing: Morning tests are best, as iron levels are generally highest then.
  • Results: Normal ranges for adults are approximately 60–170 µg/dL for serum iron, but results vary based on gender and age. High or low results help doctors determine if treatment is necessary.
